Cool Home Cinemas

Home cinema, also called home theater, are entertainment systems that seek to reproduce movie theater quality video and audio in a private home. The most basic system could be a DVD player, a standard CRT television, and a “home theater in a box”, a 2.1 speaker system with left and right speakers and a small 8″ subwoofer cabinet. An expensive home cinema set-up might include a High-Definition video format such as Blu-ray, a 60″ High-Definition Television with a “cinema-style” 16:9 format, a several thousand-watt home theatre receiver with five to seven surround sound speakers, and a powered subwoofer with a 12″ (or more) driver. The most expensive home theater set-ups, which can cost over $100,000 US, have digital projectors, expensive screens, and custom-built screening rooms which include cinema-style chairs and Audiophile-grade sound equipment.

Brand Irony

Brand Irony

Sharad Haksar  takes pictures of people in close proximity to advertisements of popular brands. Someone urinating next to a Nike slogan exhorting them to “Just do it.” Or a toothless Indian gentleman standing in front of a stack of Colgate boxes that promise “strong teeth.” His work show us how advertising gets co-opted by its environment (specially in countries of the third world), for good or for ill.

Floating Swimming Pool

A swimming pool on water, that is something you don’t see every day.

Called the Badeschiff (that’s German for “bathing ship”) this floating swimming pool is really just an old barge transformed into a public pool last year in Berlin, on the Spree river. Unfortunately, the river itself is much too polluted for people to swim in, so this idea, as crazy as it looks, makes some sense.

It was first spotted in 2007, during a very hot Summer and during the off-season it’s covered and closed to the public. But the hot Summer is here again and the Germans in Berlin will once again be able to enjoy a swim in the cool water of the Badeschiff. Would’ve been cool if it had a glass bottom though, so you could see the river.
